Deck Stain On A Pier By Water?

We now have a pier built out over our part of the lake and I was just wondering if I could apply deck stain to it since it is in the water. If I have to use some other kind of product to stain it then I would like to know what that is. Please give any help that you have if you know that I cannot use deck stain. I also might want to hire someone to stain it for us so if you know any reliable contractors in my area, then please contact me. Mostly I am just worried about the water and stain thing though.
